Transforming Lives at Chikondi Orphanage

Providing love, education and daily care to over 120 children in Lilongwe, Malawi.

The Woman Behind Chikondi

Margaret Mbwana's Story

"Chikondi means Love. That is what we give to every child who walks through our doors."

Chikondi Orphan Care was created in 2004 by Margaret Mbwana in Lilongwe, Malawi. Margaret lost her own children through HIV/AIDS and had to take on responsibility for her grandchildren, carrying all the stigma associated with this.

Determined to help other orphans in the same situation, she founded Chikondi — a place of love, safety and hope. Today, the orphanage is home to 120 orphaned and vulnerable children, and Nana Foundation has been a proud sponsor since 2015.

Our Impact

What We Have Built Together

Since 2015, Nana Foundation has worked alongside Chikondi to transform the orphanage into a safe, nurturing environment where children can learn, grow and thrive.

Rebuilt Classrooms

Replaced crumbling structures with brick-built classrooms, plastered walls and repaired flooring — giving children a proper space to learn.

Safety Perimeter

Built a perimeter wall around the entire orphanage, providing safety and privacy for all the children in our care.

Sanitation

Constructed separate-sex toilet facilities, improving hygiene, dignity and health outcomes for every child at Chikondi.

Daily Nutrition

Every child at Chikondi receives a substantial daily meal, along with basic numeracy and literacy classes to support their development.
